I thoroughly annoyed reading this novel and am eagerly awaiting the next installment. It was extremely fast-moving, never dull. The most difficult part was remembering that Jackal is ONLY ten years old - what she takes for granted verses what she doesn't know is completely opposed to everything we believe a child's life should be. Oh, and remembering the names, specialties and backgrounds of the gang members.
The futuristic world is both new and familiar (not just because it takes place in NYC, but because it also shares some post-Apocalyptic ideas with other sci-fi novels.
Ms Leone' s ability to really get into the mind and emotions of her heroine helped make this book a must read! My only regret is that it ended so soon - can't wait to read the next installment!
A very well written book. Would make a great picture. Waiting for the next book in the series. Have recomended to teens.
Once I started this book I couldn't put it down.
The main character, Jackal, is easy to relate to even though she isn't "human". Her struggles to come to grips with her own abilities both good and bad and to find a way to "fit" reverberate well with the process of growing up for any child.
Beyond the normal struggles of fitting in, the adventures that Jackal and the Mad Dogs find themselves in are a roller coaster of highs and lows with unexpected turns around every corner. Many unexpected twists to the plot kept me guessing to the end.
I look forward to seeing what new adventures Jackal and the Mad Dogs end up in next.
Kept my interest throughout, fast paced, continued storyline from standing jackal, nice balance between child and adult themes. Can't wait for book 2.
